FAQs: Everything You Need to Know to Get Rolling
Do I Need Prior Skating Experience?
Absolutely not! Our “Fresh Skates” program is designed to help you learn the ropes, or rather, the wheels!
Practice Schedule
- Fall & Winter (September – March):
- Britannia Community Centre, Vancouver: Sundays 9 am-11 am
- Spring (April – June):
- Trout Lake Community Centre, Vancouver: Tuesdays 5 pm-7 pm & Saturdays 9 am-11 am
Can I Check Out a Practice Before Committing?
Feel free to visit any practice session to see what the sport is all about. For those interested in an on-track experience, insurance will be required (see below). However, the first lesson for newbies is off-skates, so no insurance is needed.
What Gear Do I Need?
Mandatory Equipment for Skaters:
- Skates (roller derby skates are ideal)
- Helmet
- Wrist, elbow, and knee guards
- Mouthguard
- Optional: hip protectors
Note: Many of our skaters purchase gear at Roller Girl in Vancouver.
Insurance Process
If you decide to commit, we will provide you with a link to our insurance company: WFTDi. You’ll be able to follow the instructions there and get signed up.
Do I Need a Roller Derby Name?
You don’t need one, but derby names can be pretty cool! Lots of skaters take some aspect of their personal lives (interests, favourite foods, culture, etc.) and create a name out of that.
Membership Costs
Our fee is $200 per term, with three terms in a calendar year. Financial assistance is available for those who need it.
